I’m watching the opera Billy Budd and halfway through had to google whether Herman Melville was queer because the opera is so gay-coded. Both Britten and his librettist, the novelist E. Forster, were quietly gay in private life. But most felt that Armfield had got the right balance, successfully dramatizing Claggart's and Vere's attraction for Billy but also making room for the larger themes surrounding the sacrifice of an individual for the community.

I loved what he was. This article was published more than 24 years ago. In those days, critics wondered whether an opera with no female characters and no love interest could succeed. When this production opened in Cardiff insome critics argued that scenes showing both Claggart and Vere fondling a handkerchief that belongs to Billy were kitschy.

Critics have long recognized the homoerotic undercurrents in Melville's original story, which was published after his death inand in Britten's opera.
